Udupi: Customary ‘Baagina’ Offering to Swarna River on July21

Udupi, Jul 17: The custom of offering of 'Baagina' to Swarna River, the lifeline of the city, will be performed at 7.00 am on Tuesday July 21. Swarna River has been supplying drinking water to the city and irrigating the farmlands across the district, said Chimbra Siddi Vinayaka temple trustee Ramesh Rao.

Addressing the media persons at a press conference held here on Friday July 17, Rao said that Swarna River that originates in the Western Ghats, flows through the plains, before joining the Arabian Sea. It is the lifeline of peasants and citizens alike, providing drinking water and water for the agricultural activities and plantations across the district. Swarna River is supplying drinking water to the citizens in 35 wards under the local municipality and 20 villages in the district, he explained.

Sage Yugapurusha Vadiraj had stated in his scriptures that those who bathe in Suvarna River on Chaturdashi day get blessed abundantly, besides being cleansed of their sins by Lord Krishna. In the backdrop of this, district in-charge and state home minister Dr V S Acharya will initiate the tradition of offering ‘Baagina’ to Swarna River along with his wife on Tuesday morning, in order to express the gratitude of the people for the abundant supply of water to all people throughout the district, he added.
Meanwhile, the offering of ‘Baagina’ will become a tradition that will be continued in the future by the district in-charge ministers. Accordingly, ‘Baagina’ programme will be held on Tuesday morning, in association with the citizens and district administration. It will be attended by the deputy commissioner, peoples’ representatives and Sri Laxmivarateerta Swami of Shiroor Mutt.

Rain destroys 43-km stretch on NH 17 in Udupi districtA stretch of 43 km on the National Highway 17 (NH) from Shiroor to Hejmady in Udupi district has been damaged owing to heavy rains and the movement of heavy vehicles. As a result, it has become a nightmare for vehicle users to drive on it.Convener of the Save NH 17 Committee B. Govindaraj Hegde told on Monday that it was not only rains but also the movement of ironore-laden lorries (from Bellary) on NH 17, that had severely damaged the road. These ore-laden lorries are driven recklessly on the NH 17 during nights. We have to solve this problem in an impartial way, he said.Hegde said that the National Highways Department officials had told him that the re-carpeting of the severely damaged stretch between Sasthan and Santhekatte would be taken up in November.But they were silent on many other spots which were in poor shape.Our committee has written to the department, and if there is no response for that, we will launch an agitation, he said.RepairSources in the National Highways sub-division at Kundapur said that the department had started filling up the potholes on the worst affected 12-km stretch between Shiroor and Udyavara of the NH 17.However, another 24-km stretch on the same highway hds been partialIy damaged with small potholes. (TheKundapur sub-division hasjurisdiction over the road that stretches between Shiroor and Udyavara).Besides, a stretch of seven-km on NH 17 under the National Highways Mangalore sub-division, that stretches between Udyavara andHejmady in Udupi district, has also been damaged.This includes a part of the stretch in Padubidri town. While wet mix macadam, a mixture of jelly and stone dust, was being used to fill the potholes on the 12-km stretch, cationic emulsion would be used to fill the small potholes.These are temporary measures to tide over the present situation. A long lasting work will be taken up after September, when themonsoon ends, sources in Kundapur sub-division said.The Kundapur sub-division had apprised the Secretary of National Highways at New Delhi and the Chief Engineer of National Highways Department, Bangalore, of the damage that had been caused to NH 17, the sources said. The people of Padubidri staged a protest on Monday against the temporary patch work being taken up on NH 17. Udupi: Man injured; 25 houses partially damaged in rainUdupi Jul 15:A man was injured and 25 houses were partially damaged due to rain and winds in Udupi district on Tuesday.According to the Udupi Taluk Office, 17 houses were partially damaged in the taluk.In most of the cases, trees fell on the houses and damaged them. A house each was partially damaged in Yedkalbettu, Havanje, Pernankila, Hirebettu, Bada and Kudi villages when trees fell on them. Three houses were partially damaged in Giliyaru village, when trees fell on them.As many as six houses were partially damaged in Nanchar village, after trees fell on them.The damage to the six houses in this village has been estimated at Rs. 1.9 lakh. Two houses were damaged in Pejemangur village. The damage to the 17 houses in Udupi taluk has been estimated at Rs. 3.14 lakh.According to the Karkala Taluk Office, the man was travelling in his jeep at Kervase village when a tree fell on it injuring him. He was rushed to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.As many as eight houses and an anganwadi centre were damaged due to rain and winds in Karkala taluk. These are a house each at Kasaba and Shivapura villages, two houses at Varanga village, four houses.The anganwadi centre is at Hirgana village. The damage to the eight houses and the anganwadi centre has been estimated at Rs. 45,750.According to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Udupi district received an average rainfall of 42.33 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The rainfall received in the three taluks is: Udupi 35 mm, Kundapur 33.8 mm and Karkala 58.2 mm.Holiday for schoolsMonsoon intensified in Kodagu district on Tuesday with Shantalli, Talacauvery and Bhagamandala areas reporting heavy rainfall. The level of the Cauvery is threatening to cross the danger mark at various places. The river is overflowing Bhagamandala-Madikeri Road and Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri Road, according to reports reaching here.Kodagu Deputy Commissioner has declared a two-day holiday for schools and colleges and anganwadi centres in the district from Wednesday and Thursday. This is the third time monsoon holidays have been declared in the district this season.The district has received 1099.65 mm rainfall from January 1 to July 13 this year against 926.65 mm in the same period last year.

Such drains were essential in areas such as Kalsanka, Badagupete, Vidyasamudra Road, Tenkapete and Hotel Brindavan Road, it said.It should take steps to check the spread of malaria in the city, especially in those areas where rain water was clogging.Many important roads in the city were full of potholes. This had affected smooth flow of traffic, the committee said.The potholes on roads were a nuisance for pedestrians. Hence immediate steps should be taken to fill them. The Tenkapete Road, Harishchandra Road, Nivedita Road, Vadiraja Road, Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Hall Road, Kadiyali Road, Badagupete Road, and GundibailRoad needed immediate attention, it said.Many houses and shops in low-lying areas were flooded on July 6 owing to heavy rains. The people living in those areas had suffered huge losses. The CMC should compensate for the damage suffered by the people there, the memorandum said.
