MalladyMADURAI: The distance education wing of Madurai Kamaraj University is set to expand further across the country with its centres coming up at 10 places in various States.It is reaching out in a big way to students in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Karnataka and Kerala by setting up study centres besides opening spot admission centres at three places in Tamil Nadu.Varsity officials toldThe Hinduhere that a memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday with institutions which were authorised to run the centres on behalf of MKU.R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, I. Singaram, Registrar, and S. Vadivelu, Director of Distance Education, along with Syndicate members participated in the MoU signing ceremony.The Directorate of Distance Education is opening study centres at Attingal (Kerala), Udupi and Bangalore (Karnataka), Jalandhar (Punjab), Gaya (Bihar), Allahabad and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh).Spot admission centres would be opened at three places in the State -- Palani, Villupuram and Kanchipuram. Outside India, the university will have study centres at Khartoum (Sudan), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Abu Dhabi.Dr. Vadivelu said that the varsity would now be able to tap more students for its distance education courses.“By opening study centres at Udupi and Bangalore, we can strengthen our base in Karnataka and the same is with centres coming upin other States,” he said.According to him, the institutions were selected only after the Syndicate members conducted spot inspection and assessed the infrastructure available with them. “After the inspection committees gave their approval, we went ahead with the signing of MoU in the presence of Vice-Chancellor,” Dr. Vadivelu said.A word of advise and warning was given by the Vice-Chancellor to all those authorised institutions who run the study centres.The centres were told that they should keep in mind the goodwill of MKU in distance education and uphold its image.© Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu
